,Compilation presenting the most exciting drumming on SUN

•  ,  ,Putting the musicians at the center of attention. ,
• , ,  ,From legends like WS Holland, Billy Weir and Jimmy Van Eaton to one-of-a-kinds like Joey Riesenberg. ,
• , ,  ,Track-by track notes, liner notes by SUN historians, Hank Davis and Scott Parker.

Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Records

Sam Phillips’ legendary Sun Records is famous for guitar-toting stars like Elvis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, and a wild piano man named Jerry Lee Lewis. But along with those hot guitar licks and piano solos was some solid and often memorable drumming that made Sun records even more special.  ,

This is a CD for musicians as well as record collectors. We’ve saved you the trouble of going through hundreds of original sources to find the best of the best. It’s all here, in one place, culled from hundreds of hours of listening. Whether you want to bask in it or learn from it, this truly is the definitive collection of Great Drums at Sun.

Great Drums at Sun

Great Drums at Sun includes some breath-taking playing: from legends like WS Holland, Billy Weir and Jimmy Van Eaton to one-of-a-kinds like Joey Riesenberg, whose story has never been told before. Other drummers we selected - men like Bobby Crafford, Johnny Bernero and Houston Stokes - worked in near obscurity, but their brilliant playing illuminated recordings by better known vocalists. ,

Try to imagine ,Whole Lotta Shakin’ ,or ,Ubangi Stomp ,without the drums and you’ll see what we mean. Sam Phillips, the founder and guiding hand of Sun Records. He knew how to listen and he knew how important the musicians were. He went so far as to create a “house band” during Sun’s Golden Era. ,

A group of wonderful instrumentalists he would routinely call upon to play at vocalists’ recording sessions. We’ll listen to these records like Sam Phillips did. To get a deeper appreciation of the music that came out of the Sun studio. ,

The CD comes with track-by-track listening notes by musicians and Sun historians, Hank Davis and Scott Parker. In two collections of recordings from the legendary Sun label in Memphis ('Great Guitars at Sun' and 'Great Drums at Sun') we change the usual focus. Now the spotlight is off the singers and firmly on the guitarists and drummers. Who provided so much of what was great about our favorite Sun Records.  ,

There are thousands of Sun reissue albums out there but none before has put the musicians at the center of attention. That change is long overdue.

Bear Family Sun Records CD Album

Sun Records editions by Bear Family Records

Sun Records - In the spring of 1952, Sam Phillips risked founding his own record label - Sun Records. He had been an independent producer for several years and recorded the greatest R&B hit of 1951, Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88.

So Sam Phillips knew he had chosen the right job. But would it work with Sun Records, when many independent labels had to close down quickly? It didn't look good at first either. After only two releases on Sun Records there was already a one year break.

But gradually the hits set in: With recordings by Rufus Thomas, the Prisonaires, Junior Parker and of course Elvis Presley. Then there was no stopping. Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Carl Mann, Billy Riley, Warren Smith and many others joined. They have permanently changed the world of pop music.

if you're not doing something different, you're not doing anything
After the sale of the label Sun Records in 1969 there were countless re-releases of the material. But only Bear Family has always moved at a high quality level. Only these new editions of Sun Records are recommended. Because these CDs and CD album box sets deliver the best sound, the best photos, the best accompanying texts and the best presentation!

Drumming Up A Storm - Genau!"

Press - Various - SUN Records Great Guitars At Sun - Mojo Magazine compilation putting the ckbe t in the front sPat. There's a famous newsreel clip of a 1950s Southern hellfire preacher - Hank Snow's son, as it happens - denouncing rock'n'roll, claiming that what sent the kids over the edge was "the beat! the beat! the beat!". This fine collection shines the spotlight squarely on the people delivering that beat, none more so than the magnificent Jimmy Van Eaton, who drummed on 173 of the 330 songs issued during his time at Sun. He's on 14 of the 28 here, from Billy Riley's Red Hot to Jerry Lee's Whole Lotta Shakin' and Charlie Rich's

Van Eaton and W.S. Holland were forming the bedrock of rock ’n’ roll drumming on the hundreds of songs released by Sam Phillips’ in-house Sun Records label.

Press - Various - SUN Records Great Guitars At Sun - seaoftranquility You can think of this as a companion disc to Great Drums at Sun which I recently reviewed. Great Guitars at Sun features tracks by such luminaries as Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Howlin' Wolf, Dick Penner and many others. As you may have surmised the guitar is the focus this time and as such this is quite the rocking album.

Press - Various - SUN Records Great Drums At Sun - seaoftranquility As Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison were defining rock ’n’ Take note, it takes more than a great vocalist to make a great song. The underlying musicians are just as important as the front man (or woman) but it is often the singer that is thrusted into the limelight. Here we have a new disc brought to us by the good folks at Bear Family Productions.
