The whole world was Twisting during the early 1960s. It was the dance craze to end all dance crazes, bands around the globe jumping on the bandwagon to add their own variations to the theme. We ended up with a massive repository of Twist recordings, two dozen of them comprising ‘On The Dance Floor With a Twist.’ Naturally, the man who started it all, Hank Ballard, is aboard, though not with the anthem that you might expect. Jerry Lee Lewis tearing through I’ve Been Twistin’ might be a shocker to the uninitiated, while veteran bluesman Piano Red’s The Double Twist is a delight.

The Isley Brothers, Gary ‘U.S.’ Bonds, Jo Ann Campbell, and Danny and The Juniors check in with classics, while The Ventures, the Glen Campbell-led Gee Cees, and The Champs prove that no lyrics were required to go Twisting. Eddie Clearwater’s Twist Like This will leave you swearing you’re hearing a lost Chuck Berry classic; Dale Hawkins waxed his Do The Twist live in Miami, and The Top Notes’ original Twist And Shout is a real eye-opener. Obscurities by Billy Nix, The Zircons, The Chavis Brothers, and Billy Barnette and The Searchers are topped off by a marathon Chicken Twist by Paul Livert and The Lions. Good Twistin' Tonight!!

Here we get the second volume in the Bear League's "On The Dancefloor" series and now the theme is twist. In the early 1960s, the whole world twisted in the popular Twist fly. I remember that twist competitions were held at local dance events. Most people jumped on the bandwagon and the word twist was in the title of many songs. Artists who had previously made recordings during the rock era were now doing covers of their own recordings with the addition of twist in the title, with an early 60's sound and in many cases backed by choirs. The big stars at the time were Chubby Checker ("The Twist" and "Let's Twist Again") and Joey Dee ("Peppermint Twist") as I recall. But it was actually Hank Ballard who first recorded the song "The Twist" in 1958, about two years before the fly hit in earnest. In 1962 he did a song called "Good Twistin' Tonight" which is based on "Good Rockin' Tonight". We get a series of songs that I think are great like the instrumental tracks "Tequila Twist" and "Guitar Twist". Jerry Lee Lewis gives us "I've Been Twistin'" (which is actually Little Junior's "Feel So Good"). Georgia veteran Piano Red shows up here as Dr. Feelgood with the group the Interns on "The Double Twist." Other tracks that sit nicely are "Twist Like This" (Eddy Clearwater) and "Do The Twist" (Dale Hawkins). The booklet is thorough and has photos of the artists.

Round and a round and around and a round we go!!!

The wife and me tried to dance the !!!!!20 MINUTES!!!!! of 'The Chicken Twist' but we had to surrender after 14 minutes - still not bad for a 71 years old couple! :-)
