The plan was: World level! Whether the performers achieved this, every listener must decide for himself. One thing is certain - although it is only now being appreciated on CD for the first time - that in the former GDR, too, twisting was done until the joints cracked.

While the West German hip wobblers were already lagging behind the trend (once again), it took a little longer between Rostock and Aue for vocal and instrumental artists to dedicate themselves to the new dance. Because of course the party and the almighty senile crowd around Walter Ulbricht and consorts once again sensed the downfall of the West - this time fueled by the new sound that Hank Ballard, Chubby Checker & Co. had instigated in wicked America.

In order not to completely spoil things with the interested parts of the East youth, however, the state leadership gradually made concessions: While twist-related compositions were initially still coyly called 'foxtrot' on record labels, from 1963 on there was no stopping them - even 'in the East' the hips were twitching.

Popular stars from the first set of pop singers and full-time dance orchestras were involved: Ruth Brandin, Britt Kersten, Frank Schöbel and Manfred Krug (as composer/lyricist under the pseudonym Clemens Kerber) delivered titles - bands and ensembles like the Sputniks, Amigos and the Theo Schumann Combo skillfully implemented the new rhythm. And a song like the Karthäuser Knickebein Shake by Lutz Jahoda was even adopted into the repertoire in the West by Ralf Bendix.

'Twist in der DDR' is the first CD coupling on this subject and thus also a long-neglected chapter of German music history - it presents 31 classic song examples, many of which celebrate their premiere on a compact disc: collectors can breathe a sigh of relief, they no longer have to chase after various rarities (almost hopelessly). A 40-page book provides interesting background information.

Almost every time Anglo-American titles entered the local charts, they were mercilessly Germanized. These cover versions are more popular with oldie fans today than ever before.

After Twist & Surf (to which own CD-couplings were dedicated), Pop & Soul, Country & Folk, Beat & Bubblegum (which were honored on'Pop In Germany' and will continue to come) - now the rock'n' roll era must believe it.

Rock in Germany' presents hits and rarities from that time when Rockabilly & Rock'n' Roll lifted the intact German pop world off its hinges. For fans and collectors once again the opportunity to discover long sought-after treasures, because even on record fairs or on the Internet the vinyl originals are hardly to be found today. And if it does, then often at horrendous prices.

This time stars like Peter Kraus, Ted Herold, Tommy Kent, Hans Blum and Bernd Spier are honoring each other. But there are also numerous names represented where the penny simply won't fall: Hannes Wüst, Tony Ronald, Frank Olsen, Conny Quick, Hans-Uwe Schneider, Ronny Twen - to name but a few.

And what did they cover? Songs of rock greats like Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Dion, Del Shannon, Cliff Richard, the Everly Brothers and many more.

Bruce Channels Hey Baby as well as a so far undiscovered cover version of the Elvis hit I Gotta Know. And if you haven't heard the German version of Buddy Holly's That'll Be The Day - you can listen to it here. A special highlight should be Dion's Drip-Drop, sung by Pichi.
