Various: Born Bad (2-CD)

(Not Now) 40 tracks - Blues, Country and Rock'n'Roll collection of 1950s murder, gamble, crime and death songs.

If there's one subject that's truly a cornerstone of not only country music but also the blues and R&,B, it's Bad Boys - the ones who took that short but fatal step from the wrong side of the tracks to the wrong side of the law and wound up in jail, on the run, or six feet under. On this splendid 2CD compilation, you'll discover a wide selection of them.

Sometimes their troubles sprang from cocaine and booze, mostly from loving an unfaithful woman. But sometimes they were just plain mean, truly bad to the bone. I'm Bad, admits Bo Diddley, "that means don't mess with me" (also included here is his classic I'm A Man, later covered by the Spencer Davis Group). John Lee Hooker's another Bad Boy and proud of it, while B.B. King confesses he's a good man gone bad. Meanwhile Nowlin' Wolf isn't just bad, he's Evil, while Elmore James complains in his swinging, brassy blues that his woman's even worse, she's Mean And Evil. Champion Jack Dupree's woman has Bad Blood, in fact, she's an Evil Woman, "evil as could be", and we suspect the future holds murder.

The protagonist of Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues was so evil that he "shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" - which was the most horrific crime Cash was able to imagine. He later performed the song in concert at Folsom Prison itself, to thunderous applause from an audience that included several real murderers. Also included here from Cash is the mournful Delia's Gone - an admission that the singer has killed the girl he loves. "She's been out all night, and it's the break of day," is the reason Amos Milburn's ordering One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer.

,Most of the boys here turned bad because of their woman's infidelity, as Albert King explains in / Get Evil: "Two kind of people I just can't stand, that's an evil-hearted woman and a lyin' man." Don't Mess With Me Baby warns Nowlin' Wolf, while Lightnin' Hopkins has also been thinking about his woman and now has Bad Things On My Mind, before you know it, he's calling for his Shotgun, because "she's been foolin' around with too many men." John Lee Hooker's bluesy complaint sums up his feelings simply thus: I'm Gonna Kill That Woman.

Marty Robbins killed his true love on the sleepy country ballad They're Hanging Me Tonight (and also weighs in with the romantic epic Song Of The Bandit). Too many women? Muddy Waters has Double Trouble, and so does Otis Rush. Though different songs both are definitely the blues, but with a smooth band behind him Rush has the edge. Baby You Can Get Your Gun says Earl King, admitting defeat. While in Don't Dog Your Woman, Buster Brown advises: "don't doubt your woman, you know you're doing wrong yourself." Freddy King's also Takin' Care Of Business where his woman's concerned. Excuses? Otis Spann reckons that It Must Have Been The Devil that made him do it, but it sounds like he's in a bluesy honky tonk, and lying fit to bust.

Smell Trouble says Bobby 'Blue' Bland, while Hank Thompson "shot his woman down" because he went on a rampage with the Cocaine Blues. Come Saturday night, church-going 'Cile Turner just can't help himself, and turns into a Crap Shootin' Sinner. Kokomo Arnold has the Bad Luck Blues, and even the jovial Fats Domino suffers from Bad Luck And Trouble, pure and simple. Lowell Fulson also bemoans his Trouble, Trouble, while Eddie Taylor is Lookin' For Trouble in female form "and I hope it's looking for me." As for outlaws, Jimmie Driftwood celebrates Jesse James with a Woody Guthrie-style Western ballad.

Frankie Laine's a Wanted Man - "always on the run", and poor old Sam Cooke is only One Hour Ahead Of The Posse. A real lost oddity, this one. You could end up in prison, where "there's a lot of strange men in cell block ten," as Freddie Hart complains on the countryish The Wall. Lazy Lester's also stuck in jail in Patrol Blues "and someone else done took my place." The lighter side of prison is explored in Glen Campbell's folksy Lonesome Jailhouse Blues (some dazzling guitar-picking here). And even bad boys die. Johnny Horton took a fancy to a saloon girl in When It's Springtime In Alaska, earning him a knifing by her husband. Bob Dylan's also Fixin' To Die, while the narrator of Lefty Frizell's The Long Black Veil (later covered by The Band) didn't kill anyone, but the only way he could prove it is to betray his married mistress. He chooses the gallows instead. The boys may be bad, but the songs are anything but!
