Various - 1000 Nadelstiche: Vol.11, Beat & Pop - Amerikaner & Briten singen deutsch (CD)

1-CD with 40-page booklet, 26 tracks, playing time 69:13 minutes.

1000 pinpricks, episode 11 (Beat & Pop)

The break was necessary. It had to be searched, sniffed, researched anew - tapes, info, covers, photos and so on. But, this is already certain: It was worth it!

The reaction to the first 'Beat' episode (BCD 16548 AH) of our CD series was enormous. Rarities like the songs of the Flamingos, Benny, Brian Diamond & The Cutters, the Liverpool Beats, Merseybeats and others could be heard on CD for the first time in the usual top sound quality. It was clear that a sequel had to come - one that (like all previous editions of the series) should also be full to the brim. A small, but certainly not disturbing trick was necessary. The reason: You couldn't put a complete disc together from 'pure' beat material - for lack of mass. That's why - and because the stylistic boundaries are often fluid anyway - we decided to add titles to the offer that are more likely to belong to the 'pop' genre, but are not too far away musically. The (guaranteed welcome) result: more CD premieres and even titles that nobody knew existed before!

1967/68 saw the release in Germany of two singles by performers who had already caused quite a stir in their British homeland: Peter (Asher) & Gordon (Waller), promoted to the best of their ability by the Beatles, and singer Keith West, who, together with his German-born producer and partner Mark Wirtz, had put the 'Teenage Opera' on track. Both teams also worked hard in German, but they didn't get any green shoots. The result: Up to now there have been four songs: Liebe, Glück und Treue/Wunder und Engel fall nicht vom Himmel/Shy Boy not on an official CD made in Germany - the present coupling provides a remedy, the topic can be put on the record. Note: On the original cover of the West-/Wirtz-Single a mistake had crept in: Sky Boy is wrong, the correct title is, as already mentioned above, Shy Boy.

Barry Ryan's record company provided a curiosity. The fact that the Eloise singer has recorded several German titles is well known (and has been documented in issues of our series that have already been published). A real surprise was a CD released in Germany (Spectrum 554 117): The song Goodbye had been Ryan's hardly noticed solo single debut in England - of course in his native language. On the Compact Disc mentioned above - and strangely enough only there - you will find (without any hint in the booklet!) the German version of the same name! When, where and why this version came into being and how it came onto the CD at all can no longer be clarified bindingly. Barry Ryan couldn't remember taking her in upon request. And if you trust the official company records, it doesn't exist at all....

The same is true for the two treasures of Bobby Goldsboro that we have here. On the track of the American hit supplier (among other things Honey) a nearly 40 years old program reference from the TV magazine 'Funk Uhr' put us on. The man from Marianna, Florida, is said to have performed the song Es ist zu spät on March 9, 1967 on ZDF's 'Drehscheibe'. A release of this title as a single, on a longplayer record or a vinyl sampler has definitely not been made, however, and this is also a bad thing on many Goldsboro LP and CD compilations around the globe. Intensive research finally led to success: There is indeed an archived master tape containing the German version of It's Too Late! And, cream blot on top, a second title was found immediately, Why does love make so blind? Whether with this song pairing a single for the local market was at least planned at that time can no longer be proven. One thing is for sure: Here it sets two world premieres that nobody had on their note originally!

The A-side of a single by Paul Rodgers rounds off the concentrated range of rarities offered by the Pop faction on this CD. Actually the interpreter of Meine Liebe wird niemals Ende was Paul Murphy, came from Liverpool and is at least via this 'redirection' the link to the beat that makes up the bulk of this release. Rodgers/Murphy was one of the pioneers of this genre in his hometown, playing with local legend Johnny Guitar, among others. Years later, the man from Mersey River worked in Germany as a producer for the Polydor and also managed Tony Sheridan's business as a manager. Under his second pseudonym Benny we have already presented him on the '1000-Needelstiche' episodes 1 and 6 - an all-rounder.

Rare without end we present here, in the offer are international CD first releases en masse. It goes across the British-Irish geography, represented by well-known names and outsiders alike. Dickie Rock, former showband star (born 1943) from Dublin, has only tried once in German language to find the vinyl single with the Chuck-Berry/Beatles classic Rock 'n' Roll Music is hard to find.

The Scottish colours are represented by a singer from Glasgow who was a regular guest at the legendary 'Top Ten' club in Hamburg from 1963, where she mostly played with the All Stars (permanently changing line-ups with German and British musicians): Isabella Bond released several singles and even two albums, but didn't get beyond the role of an eternal insider tip. At the beginning of the seventies her trail is lost, she is said to have emigrated to Canada. Bond recorded three songs in German, the original titles of the songs all received no translation: Bread And Butter, Tennessee Waltz and Downtown - whoever buys this CD owns it completely.

Also from Scotland, also three titles and also in this agglomeration for the first time on CD: John O'Hara And His Playboys. The sextet (formed in Glasgow) tended to marginalize the pure 60s beat and saw itself more as a show, dance and entertainment combo. We have renounced the existing LP tracks Humba Humba Tä-Tä-Rä and Es gibt kein Bier auf Hawaii, but also Stampfkartoffeln Tä-Tä-Rä, Das war gestern and 1-2-3 (is your little pain over) give a good impression of where the musical journey of the amusing (and then very popular!) party riots is going.

All good - and extremely rare - things are known to be three; after Bond and O'Hara this also applies to one of the original beaters from Liverpool, Denny Seyton. Born as Brian Hamilton Tarr, the singer began to make the region around the Mersey River unsafe in the very early sixties. His first popular band, The Sabres, was Denny Seyton's show group after several reshuffles.  Distributed on two Decca singles of the series 'Beat For Beaters', three songs appeared in German language: Hush A Bye, Du bist meine wahre Liebe und Mir geht es wieder besser (all included here for the first time). In the band stood with the late guitarist Harold 'Lally' Stott the man who in 1971 as composer provided the band Middle Of The Road with the mega hit Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep Cheep.

From 1963 the Spencer Davis Group belonged to the best and best known English 60s formations. The grandiose R&B band from Birmingham lost their frontman Steve Winwood to Traffic in 1967, but even without him the group guaranteed at least solid quality. What the original combo with Det had done in Schöneberg (see Vol. 1 of our series; BCD 16366), the new crew continued: (Aquarius) Der Wassermann, an excerpt from the musical classic 'Hair', profited from the language skills of guitarist and namesake Spencer Davis - he had already studied German at the Free University of Berlin in 1962.

Almost unknown in England (and without record release) were Kent Aston And The Sorcerers from the Nest Cirencester near Oxford. They did it like so many of their fellow countrymen: Because of the oversupply of bands (and the corresponding competition) in their homeland, they came to Germany in the mid-sixties and often played in the Frankfurt area. The small Kerston label gave the group a chance, one of the singles they created was one with two tracks in German: Baby let's go dancing and Love A Girl From Heidelberg (both CD premieres here!). With regard to singer Kent Aston's German articulation, a testimony would note: He has made an effort.... The Sorcerers also included a later world-class musician: Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and many other top acts used the spectacular drumming of Colin Flooks alias Cozy Powell (1947 - 1998; death after traffic accident) since the seventies.

Another outsider in England was the singer Colin Anthony. With his Beat Combo he only made it into clubs, posters and records in Germany. The Fontana label released a single and an LP; the album was recorded at the 'Star Palast' in Kiel. The 45's Crazy Beatle Boots with English-German mixed singing was completely lost here and has long been a sought-after rarity. To the detailed biography of the musician nothing was to be experienced up to today. Album producer Siegfried E. Loch could only confirm on demand: "Anthony was British, not American".

Quasi fresh from the research, as highlights of an already full coupling - first the band The 5 Liverpools. The group was originally formed as Liverpool Five by four Londoners and bassist Dave Burgess (alias David McKuminskey). They came to Germany, performed in shows with the Rattles and Drafi Deutscher, among others. Through a local agent, the troupe then received the surprising offer to represent Great Britain in the musical supporting programme of the Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964). The Liverpool Five, of course, accepted, received a CBS contract for an LP on top of that, and were renamed The 5 Liverpools. From the album recorded in Cologne, Tokyo was released as a single in German language.

After completing their stay in Japan, the quintet (now again as Five Liverpools) settled in the USA and recorded the LPs 'Arrive' (1966) and 'Out Of Sight' (1967) for RCA. As bonus tracks on this compilation we have added the songs Sheila (not the Tommy Roe-hit and sung as "Scheila"!) and Hey Sunny. Here the German early rock 'n' roller Tommy Kent (= Guntram Kühbeck) as singer is at work, but - what is hardly known - his accompanying band, sold on the cover as the 'Liverpool Blue Beats', were those 5 Liverpools!

The icing on the cake of this compilation is a man who became one of the most popular, biting and successful UK comedians after his career as a musician: Freddie Starr (born Frederic Leslie Fowell). The Liverpooler belonged to Howie Casey's Seniors in the 60s as a singer, then he was chief of the Star Boys, Midnighters, Flamingos and Delmonts and could be heard on various records. The former Managing Director of Deutsche Vogue, Larry Yaskiel, recalled in a conversation a (unpublished) German-language recording that he made himself with Starr, only: "Where do you get it from... after 40 years?! A never-ending, long futile research found a positive end - a goal, and what a positive end: You'll Never Walk Alone, the later, world-famous club anthem of FC Liverpool, intoned by Freddie Starr under the title You'll never be lonely ! This hitherto undiscovered rarity will be presented here exclusively for the first time worldwide.

1000 Nadelstiche - Bernd Matheja

They tormented themselves with prehistoric cardboard prompters or stuck their tongues out because they simply had thick faxes: World stars such as Connie Francis and Johnny Cash (see front page) were among the countless Anglo-American performers to whom their respective record companies have devoted special attention since the 1950s: Lyrics in German language - and singing them if possible......

The result sounded either simply touching in the buyer's ears here, or one could get so wonderfully excited about bumping. However, it was not inconvenient for those responsible, because the artists were either talking or at least talking in this way.

Connie and Johnny were still among the few singers who had hardly any problems with what was demanded. Francis, for example, released a single on single, and by means of such mass production, the initial syllable plumbing quickly regulated itself - in other words, lörning at duing.

Country expert Cash, on the other hand, was - like his compatriot Elvis Presley, for example - one of those who had been able to preserve German residual articulation: JC, very professional, reactivated stored words from his time with the US Army in Landsberg am Lech.

However, the majority of the victims, mostly confronted for the first time in their lives with "ä", "ö" and "ü", struggled with the sweaty poems for them, so they struggled with the umlaut and often delivered end products as if a whisk had fallen into a bucket of alphabet soup. Who could convince an ex-Cowboy from Colorado or a trained telephonist from Littlehampton that after their successful retraining as singing artists, the thing with the "ch" would now also have to work out alternatively as a tongue or throat sound? From now on, of course.....

In such cases of hardship, the phonetic pastoral care provided by producers and language teachers in the studios, who were set on march, usually also failed. However, in order not to completely annoy the tormented and to keep the costs of admission within reasonable limits, they gladly agreed on the formula "fits, wobbles and has air".

The result, as in 1964 in the case of the Searchers, was an opening line like: "Ick sasi heute nackt....". And already - scandalous mess! the trouble about her actually harmless "Tausn Naddelschtischa" really started.....
