Neal Umphred has been involved with collecting records since the '60s as a hobbyist, and, for the past ten years, as a professional. He is the author of GOLDMINE'S PRICE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE RECORD ALBUMS and GOLDMINE'S PRICE GUIDE TO COLLECTIBLE JAZZ ALBUMS, and has also published price guides for O'Sullivan Woodside and White Dragon Press. He is a regular contributor to GOLDMINE magazine, "the collector's record & compact disc marketplace."

Foreword Into The Past
The intention of this foreword is to present the reader familiar with this book with changes in the format of this edition and to make a few pointed observations. (Not that the new reader shouldn't read this, also.) The introduction, which explains how to use this book, remains more or less the same. The most important new feature is a guide to label identification for more than 100 companies of the '50s and '60s that will help the reader through the morass of collecting originals.

More and more, Goldmine's Rock'n Roll 45RPM Record Price Guide reflects the increasing stratification of our society with the ability of the few to purchase (and do) whatever they want at odds with the rest, who must find more clever ways of obtaining their wants or needs with diminishing disposable income. Almost daily the choice items in any given field (art, wine, comic books, you name it) are taking off like a banshee out of Hell while the more common collectibles run in place. Why am I babbling on about this? Well, each succeeding edition of each of my price guides (including Goldmine's Price Guide To Collectible Record Albums and Goldmine's Price Guide To Collectible Jazz Albums) reflects more often the values of rare records as they are determined by the specialist, mail-order dealer who caters to an increasingly elite clientele.

The values assigned in this book to truly Near Mint rarities reflects what these records are worth to those with the money to buy them and the know-how to obtain or sell them, since they are almost exclusively bought and sold by these dealers and collectors. Record collectors conventions are evolving/devolving into a permanent system of bargain basement type institutions where the buyers come prepared to find all but steal collectibles (in a figurative sense, of course). And, still not knowing whether it was first the chicken or the egg, most dealers who set up at shows expect to sell their items for somewhat less than the top dollar.

So, for those of you reading and using this book more or less as novices, please bear in mind that the values that this book reflect may be quite inflated for an in-person show and that some scaling down may be necessary. In these cases, the book's biggest value may be as a guide informing you of the relative rarity/value of given pieces. Bear in mind, this is not to say that you, as a seller, cannot ask the prices in this book — or higher— and get them but that, in the overwhelming majority of cases, such will not be the case. Now.. .

Since the digital takeover, the passion for vinyl has not only not dimin-ished, it has taken off like a rocket! Record highs are being paid for artifacts of the '50s and '60s (and, yes, even the much-maligned '70s and '80s) on a regular basis! Are you aware that there are almost thirty singles, picture sleeves or EPs by Elvis and nearly forty by The Beatles that are now worth $1,000 or more? Or that Tori Amos, the hottest young singer in the country at the time of this book's completion, has a single with a picture sleeve from her first album that now sells for $100?

This edition contains thousands of new entries while correcting typo-graphical errors and inaccurate data from the previous edition. Examples of the latter include Carol & Sheryl's "Go Go GTO" on Colpix, one of the rarest of all car singles that sells for hundreds of dollars to Pontiac aficionados, which was listed in the 2nd edition for $20! And then there's Deacon & The Rock 'N' Rollers on Nau-Voo, also formerly listed for $20 although it is a four-figure rockabilly collectible!
