The Sweet

The Sweet aus dem englischen Middlesex nannten sich ursprünglich Sweet Shop und waren bis 1970 mit Motown-Kopien eine der vielen dritt-klassigen, unterbezahlten und überarbeiteten britischen Diskothekenbands. Dann holte sie der ehemalige Drummer und Produzent Phil Wainman ins Studio und jagte mit ihrer Hilfe eine ganze Serie von Bubblegum-Singles aus der Feder von Nicky Chinn und Mike Chapman die Hitleitern empor: Funny Funny, Co-Co, Alexander Graham Bell, Poppa Joe, Little Willy, Wig-Wam Bam, Block-buster etc. Wainman ließ seinen instrumentaltechnisch unterentwickelten Schützlingen Brian Con-nolly (voc), als Brian McManus am 5. Oktober 1949 in Hamilton, Schottland, geboren, Andy Scott (g), am 30. Juni 1951 in Wrekham, Wales, geboren, Steve Priest (bg), am 23. Februar 1950 in Hayes, Middlesex, geboren, Mick Tucker (dr), am 17. Juli 1949 in Harlesden, London, geboren, Hilfe von Gastmusikern zuteil werden, blendete beispielsweise in Blockbuster Sirenengeheul ein.
