Who was/is Eric Burdon & The Animals ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

Viele der frühen Beatbands der 'British Invasion' waren vom amerikanischen Blues und R&B besessen. Doch nur wenige zeigten ihre Leidenschaft so offen und freimütig wie Eric Burdon und die Animals- ihr früher energiegeladener, auf Blues basierender Rock knisterte vor purer Freude, in die (zu großen) Fußstapfen ihrer Helden zu treten. Burdon (geboren am 11. Mai 1941 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) lernte den Schlagzeuger John Steel 1956 an der Kunsthochschule in Newcastle kennen. Sie gründeten kurz danach eine Band, The Pagan Jazzmen, deren Name bald in The Pagans gekürzt wurde.

Nachdem der Pianist Alan Price hinzugekommen war und sie sich auf Rock 'n' Roll und R&B konzentrierten, änderten sie ihre Bezeichnung erneut in The Kansas City Five. Price verließ die Band, um sich den Kontours anzuschließen, später umbenannt in The Alan Price R&B Combo, der schließlich der E-Bassist Chas Chandler, E-Gitarrist Hilton Valentine, Burdon und Steel angehörten. Price modernisierte ihren Sound, indem er sich eine Vox Continental Orgel zulegte.

Ein letzter Namenswechsel zu The Animals und eine kurze Liaison mit dem amerikanischen Bluesharp-Star Sonny Boy Williamson folgten Ende 1963, bevor der Produzent Mickie Most die junge Band unter Vertrag nahm. Die erste Session der Animals im Januar 1964 ergab vier Titel, darunter eine Coverversion von John Lee Hookers Boom Boom, die später ein Hit wurde. Aber diese Titel wurden erst mal zur Seite gelegt, als das Quintett sich einen Monat später wieder im Studio traf. Einer der an diesem Tag aufgenommenen Songs, Baby Let Me Take You Home, war auf Bob Dylans Debüt-LP als Baby Let Me Follow You Down enthalten, obwohl vielleicht auch eine alte Platte von Josh White der Ursprung für die Version der Animals war. Valentines twistende Gitarreneinwürfe, das frenetische Tempo und am Ende eine Improvisation mit Gospel-Feuer waren frisch und originell – sie machten aus dem Song im Frühjahr einen soliden Hit auf British Columbia (in den USA wurden ihre Platten auf MGM veröffentlicht). Der andere nennenswerte Song an diesem Aufnahmetag war House Of The Rising Sun. Niemand weiß, ob dieser uralte Blues, der in einem Bordell spielt, seinen Ursprung bei weißen oder afro-amerikanischen Musikern hat.

Die Animals schnappten ihn angeblich vom nordenglischen Folksänger Johnny Handle auf, der ihn wahrscheinlich von Joan Baez, Bob Dylan oder Dave Van Ronk kannte- Josh White wäre eine weitere Möglichkeit. Price beanspruchte die Autorenschaft, weil er sich das düstere Arrangement ausgedacht hatte, in dem seine atmosphärische elektrische Orgel und Valentines sorgfältig artikulierte Gitarrenarpeggios die Hauptzutaten hinter Burdons bluesgetränktem Gesang sind. House Of The Rising Sun machte die Animals in Amerika wie auch in ihrer Heimat zu Stars, denn es schoss im Sommer des Jahres auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks auf den Spitzenplatz der Hitparade (die britische Single lief länger als vier Minuten, die gekürzte US-Version etwas unter drei). Der Autor Colin Escott hält sie für eine epochale Platte, denn sie wärmte nicht einfach nur amerikanische Musik auf, sondern erfand sie neu. Weitere Hits folgten auf dem Fuße: die Price- - Burdon-Eigenkomposition I'm Crying noch im selben Jahr sowie spektakuläre Interpretationen von Don't Let Me Be Understood (diesmal definitiv von Nina Simone), Barry Mann und Cynthia Weils We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place und vom trotzigen It's My Life 1965, bevor man auf die Produktionskünste des Popmusik-erfahrenen Most verzichtete (auf den beiden letztgenannten Aufnahmen spielte schon Dave Rowberry die Keyboards, nachdem Price ausgestiegen war, um seine eigene Band zu gründen).

Tom Wilson leitete die Aufnahmen für die letzten beiden großen Animals-Hits 1966, Carole King und Gerry Goffins Don't Bring Me Down sowie eine ganz eigene, markante Version von 'Ma' Raineys Vorkriegs-Bluesstandard See See Rider. Die Originalbesetzung der Animals löste sich während einer US-Tournee mit Herman's Hermits auf. Burdon zog an die US-Westküste, wo sein Sound viel rockorientierter und politisch aufgeladen wurde. Sein Millionenhit Spill The Wine 1970 mit der Funk-Rock-Band War verstärkte seine kompromisslose Verbindung zum authentischen R&B noch weiter.
