THE PAGES

Smoky dives, running water on the wall, wooden stalls with toilets to fear, dubious club owners, brutal pimps, drunk GIs, fists loose like John Waynes Colt. So it looked in the clubs of the part of Germany we want to descend to. The Hamburg Reeperbahn, on the other hand, was like Legoland. Well, almost. Nevertheless: military policemen, mercilessly bludgeoning at every occasion - no matter who had started there. You can ask later. The dentists got rich back then. So are the club owners. Frankfurt, Hanau, Wiesbaden, Mainz. Mainz! And between all the dirt, spilled beer, spit out teeth, horny soldiers, money-grabbing thugs, a petite doll stands on stage and plucks the guitar. That alone would be worth the entrance fee - and a posthumous medal for bravery. But the little black-haired girl swings a fender board and plays rock 'n' roll. Come on over baby, whole lotta shakin' goin' on... In the beginning still in the confirmation dress. Great Balls Of Fire everywhere. Later in sweater and pants.

The first page of the Pages was opened in the Vereinshaus der Naturfreunde zu Mainz. Helga 'Jo' Gwiasta (pre-Soul Sisters, guitar), Peter 'Pit' Kolb (piano, drums) and Hanz Fritsch (accordion), cheerful sages, took their music from German folk music. All civil and lovely. Here and there Robert 'Robby' nurse stopped by, lost his heart to Helga after a short time and was now a regular guest at the rehearsals. Also Helga was not unsympathetic to Robert and so it was decided to take him into the band - after all he was the owner of an automobile. However, the decision was that Robert should learn to play the trumpet, so that he could be useful to the band musically as well as driving.

So Robert Pfleger bought a trumpet and took lessons. At one of the joint rehearsals, Pfleger also sat behind the shooting gallery and drummed so brilliantly that none of those present wanted to believe that he was working behind the drums for the first time. That was the end of Pfleger's career as a trumpet virtuoso, because now he was detached to practice drumming in all its basics. So also among these four young people from Mainz the leisure time was meaningfully filled, and between Jo and Robby the love bond became tighter and tighter.

The band had already made some appearances when a local Elvis showed the band how good he was at King of Rock 'n' Roll. Karl-Heinz Bender (pre-Karl-Heinz Bender & The Black Panthers, pre-Poor Things, pre-Soul Five) was his name, and since the young audience was crazy about Rock 'n' Roll, the decision was made to continue with five of them and to transfer the musical search for direction to Karl-Heinz Bender. So Jo's Hot Cats were born and Hans Fritsch became superfluous, because another Rock 'n' Roll fool was summoned for the melody guitar: Johnny Kelly, an American who was transferred to Germany by the US Army.

THE PAGES

Come on over baby, whole lotta shakin' goin' on... Am Anfang noch im Konfirmationskleidchen. Great Balls Of Fire überall.
