Die 5-Mann-Truppe, die unter anderem mit Fiedel, Waschbrett, Mandoline, Sägen und Glasflaschen aller Art musiziert, will bewußt Musik zum Wohlfühlen für fröhliche Hörer machen. Die Gruppe, die sich einen eigenen Stil aus Folklore, Blues, Jug-Band-Music, Skiffle und Bluegrass zusammengemixt hat, erinnert leicht an den legendären Nonsens Spike Jones'. Weil sie sich stilistisch nicht festlegen laslen will, wurde die Gruppe bisher in keinem Musikgenre wirklich populär. Der erfolgreichste Film, in dem die Nitty Gritty Dirt Band bislang zu hören war, war das Musical „Paint Your Wagon'.
