Ronnie McDowell`s große Stunde schlug, als er am 16. August 1977 die Nachricht von Elvis' Tod erhielt. Er schrieb und sang unter dem ersten Eindruck der Trauer den Song ,The King ls Gone“ und hatte Erfolg. Seine Firma versuchte zunächst, ihn als eine Art Elvis-Nachfolger zu etablieren, doch sehr rasch zeigte sich, dass Ronnie McDowell ein durchaus eigenständiger Sänger mit persönlicher Note war. Der Elvis-Touch wurde rasch ad acta gelegt und McDowell gehört längst zur ersten Garnitur in Nashville.
