Johnny Mathis introduced one of his most romantic and sensual albums in his extensive discography in the 1980s. Different Kinda Different Different, his first album of the decade, brought Mathis together with producer Jack Gold and arranger Gene Page for a set that lived up to its title by highlighting many new songs that only The Voice of Romance could deliver. Two crackling pop-soul duets with singer Paulette McWilliams, "Different Kinda Different" and "I'd Do It All for You", are the heart of an eclectic album that also includes tracks by Sammy Cahn, Teddy Randazzo and Steve Dorff as well as a pair of classic standards ("Deep Purple", "Temptation"), the timeless disco anthem "I Will Survive" and the haunting movie theme "With You I'm Born Again".

Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records' definitive Expanded Edition of Different Kinda Different contains almost an entire album with bonus tracks totalling nine. These include a series of exciting session outtakes such as Johnny's velvety interpretation of Lionel Richie's "Three Times a Lady" and the new songs recorded for Mathis' 1981 retrospective The First 25 Years "The Silver Anniversary Album". Everything was remastered by Mike Piacentini at Sony's Battery Studios, and the deluxe booklet includes new liner notes from The Second Disc's Joe Marchese based on brand new interviews with Johnny Mathis and Paulette McWilliams.

Geboren 1937 in San Francisco Beinahe hätte der Ex-Sportlehrer seine Talente als Athlet beweisen müssen, denn 1956 sollte er an den Qualifikationskämpfen für die Olympischen Spiele teilnehmen. Dazwischen kam eine Kleinigkeit - ein Auftritt Johnny Mathis' im „440 Club' in San Francisco, bei dem zufällig ein Talentsucher der CBS anwesend war. Er sang, und der Talentsucher honorierte mit einem Vertrag, der Johnny Mathis zu einem Superstar machte.

Seither setzte Mathis Maßstäbe im Showgeschäft: Bisher veröffentlichte Johnny 50 Alben. Er ist der einzige amerikanische Sänger, dem es gelang, gleichzeitig 4 Langspielplatten in der US-Bestsellerliste zu haben. Seine LP „Johnny Mathis Greatest Hits' hielt sich über den Zeitraum von 8 Jahren in den amerikanischen Top 100. So ist es kein Wunder, wenn sich in Mathis' Ranch bei Santa Barbara in Kalifornien die Goldenen Schallplatten im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes stapeln.
