J. B. Lenoir is one of the most outstanding blues musicians of all time. His LP Alabama Blues is the first recording by a blues poet who was very critical of the social and political situation of black people living in the USA in 1965. This musical document was created long before the black community was proud of its heritage - its roots. Jimi Hendrix was the first artist to acknowledge that J. B. Lenoir's work, preserved on this album, was an essential part of his self-liberation and self-discovery.
Although the Library of Congress in Washington included this LP in its archives as part of American music history, comparable to Duke Ellington's 'Black, Brown and Beige Suite' for example, it was never released in the U.S. and it was also difficult to obtain in Europe. 'Alabama Blues' therefore became one of the most sought after collector's items. Pure Pleasure Records is delighted and at the same time proud to re-release this blues masterpiece.

J. B. Lenoir was born in Monticello, Mississippi on March 5, 1929. He died in an auto accident in Champaign, Illinois on April 29, 1967. Lenoir recorded regularly from 1951 until shortly before his death, mostly on Chicago-based labels such as Chess, Checker, Parrot and Relic. On some of his early records he was backed by His Bayou Boys and in 1963 he recorded several sides with His African Hunch Rhythm, a group that included Willie Dixon on second vocals.

Lenoir had a history of writing and recording topical songs. In addition to Vietnam, examples include Korea Blues ['51], I'm In Korea ['54], Eisenhower Blues ['54], Alabama March ['65], Everybody Crying About Vietnam ['65], Shot On James Meredith ['66] and Vietnam Blues ['66]. His only R&B chart entry, under the name J.B. Lenore, was the 1955 song Mama, Talk Your Daughter [#11].
