Next Stop Vietnam

The Warrior

Honey Ltd.

Honey Ltd. was a female quartet from the Detroit area featuring Laura Polkinghorne, Marsha Jo Temmer, and sisters Alexandra 'Alex' and Joan Sliwin.  The four met as undergraduates at Wayne State University.  They began recording as the Mama Cats, playing the same club scene as another local Detroit rocker, Bob Seger. Seger in fact wrote and produced My Boy, a song about a young man bound for Vietnam, for the group's first single.

In 1967 the group moved to Los Angeles where they auditioned for songwriter/producer Lee Hazlewood. Upon hearing their four part harmonies he is quoted as saying, "Yeah, I think we can do something," and quickly signed them to his Lee Hazlewood Industries [LHI] label. One of his first managerial decisions was to change the group's name from Mama Cat to Honey Ltd. Next he supervised an eight-song LP that opened with The Warrior. Writer Jonthan Ward called it "a terrifying anti-war song that conversely, at times sounds like a frightening call for blood."

It was another track from the album, Come Down, that became Honey Ltd's first LHI single and got them on television shows such as Joey Bishop and 'Operation Entertainment.' Bob Hope saw them perform on 'The Jerry Lewis Show' and asked them to join his USO show to Vietnam. Ward wrote that "although against the war, in December of '68 they joined The Golddiggers, Rosey Grier and Ann-Margret for a two-week stint entertaining troops."
