Klaus W. Hoffmann

"The child's claim to his well-being is only fulfilled when he really 'feels well' and his free development is guaranteed." (Klaus W. Hoffmann)

Born in Dortmund in 1947, Klaus W. Hoffmann has been writing his own songs since the early 70s. Already in 1965 he played in a suburban rock band. Afterwards he found his way to the folk song and performed with a colourful mixture of international folklore, protest songs and democratic folk songs. In addition there were literary chansons such as Heine, Graßhoff and Kästner settings. Hoffmann has been working with songs and stories for children since 1974, and since 1981 he has been working as a freelance author. The Song of Otherness was written in 1979, "Experiences with my daughter Christine have inspired me to write this song. At that time she was just starting school in Dortmund-Bövinghausen. The pupils of the primary school were recruited from different social strata: Middle class and so-called lower class (Sinti and Roma, Turks etc.). But in the course of the school year, after numerous problems, my daughter's school class developed into the 'Land of the Colourfully Mixed', which is described in the 'Song of Otherness'." In 1980 Hoffmann's Lied was released on the LP 'Das Bärenorchester', for which the songwriter was awarded the quarterly prize of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik. The song of otherness has evolved over time into Hoffmann's most widely played piece and has "perhaps contributed a little to the integration of outsiders". The stories, radio plays, songs and poems of Klaus W. Hoffmann have been published in numerous books, on many audio carriers, on radio and television (in the 'Sendung mit der Maus').
