Much has been written and published about Ellie Greenwich, so it's really hard to choose the right words for a compilation like the one presented here. Ellie's for sure most famous for her composer work (together with former husband Jeff Barry) — a work that gave us countless hits in the sixties when recorded by the Crystals, Dixie Cups, Lesley Gore, Darlene Love, Ronettes, Beach Boys, Ike & Tina Turner - just to name a few of the more well-known artists. When it comes to her own performances, her mid '80s "Leader Of The Pack" musical is often mentioned, sometimes a side note is added concerning her two unsuccessful solo albums from the late 60s / early 70s — plus her work with the Raindrops, but all her early solo work is almost non-existent in ANY form. You are more lucky because you've bought this CD set — it will change the situation. For the first time ever here's the chance to hear how it started —inside the Brill Building, 1619 Broadway. This collection adds together for the first time the complete early work of Ellie Greenwich, her first singles under the names of Ellie Gaye (from as early as 1958), Ellie Gee & The Jets (1960), Kellie Douglas (1962) plus the mid 60's releases for Red Bird, United Artists and Bell. We've skipped her work with the Raindrops that is available (almost) complete on another CD, but space allowed us to added the complete content of her two albums for United Artists and Verve in pristine original Stereo quality. This might be a minor duplication with other CDs, but the others missed some of the tracks to make it as complete as it is now. Nevertheless, the greatest surprise comes last — almost 20 tracks recorded during the 60s by Ellie Greenwich (but not released) survived the years and found a new home on this CD set. After all these years, here's a chance to hear how it had started inside the Brill Building, 1916 Broadway. Many of these songs (sung by Ellie Greenwich) were meant as demos for the publishers and A & R managers to find the right artist to get them recorded.

Ellie Greenwich,
born on Long Island, New York in 1940, first recorded unsuccessfully for RCA in the late Fifties, as Ellie Gay, and played local dance hops. In 1960, she majored in English at college and worked as a teacher for a short spell before breaking into the songwriting field by co-writing (with Tony Powers) 'This Is It' for Jay and the Americans and 'He's Got The Power' for the Exciters. In 1963, she began co-writing with her boyfriend, Jeff Barry, and, working in close alliance with producer Phil Spector, they notched up a series of hits by the Ronettes, the Crystals and Bob B. Soxx.
Drifting away from Spector in 1964, Greenwich and Barry were responsible for 80 per cent of the Red Bird label's early output, including such hits as 'Chapel Of Love' and 'Goodnight Baby', and, during 1965-7, they performed a similar role for Bert Bern's Bang label, where they produced Neil Diamond. In the late Sixties, Greenwich and Barry were divorced and she retired temporarily before attempting a comeback as a singer-songwriter with an album on Verve in 1973.
