THE FOUR RENDERS
The Four Renders were founded in 1960 as a loose formation with boys from the street by Herbert Bornholdt in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. The average age of the members was about 13-14 years. In 1961 the group consisted of Herbert Bornholdt (drums, vocals), Hermann 'Rugy' Rugenstein (lead guitar, vocals), Klaus Rebesky (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ingo Lührs (bass, vocals).
Klaus Rebesky: "When the Rattles won the Star Club competition in 1962, we were already so advanced that we said, 'Next time we'll be there, too'."
The contest on December 3, 1963, was indeed won by the Four Renders. On the present Ariola documentation of this event, which, as is well known, except for the Four Renders songs, was not recorded for the record until later, they are represented with three titles typical of that time: Go, Johnny, Go by Chuck Berry, Beautiful Dreamer, popular in the Star Club through the versions of the Searchers and Cliff Bennett, and Chan Romero's Hippy Hippy Shake, which the Beatles also had in their program, but which became famous in the version of the Swinging Blue Jeans.
Manfred Weissleder signed the winners. When Herbert Bornholdt finished his apprenticeship in the spring of 1964, the Star Club boss sent the group through his branches all over Germany. One of the trips even took the Four Renders to the stronghold of British beat in Liverpool on February 28, 1964, where they performed at the Iron Door Club ('Home Of The Searchers').
Klaus Rebesky tells: "Manfred Weissleder chartered three small airplanes to bring the Phantom Brothers, the German Bonds and us (all winners of the Star Club competition December 1963) together with our entourage to Liverpool for a long weekend. When we arrived, the fans, 90% of them girls, were already lined up at the top of the airport terminal. As we passed through customs, each one was immediately grabbed by a girl, seized, so to speak, and not let go until the end of our stay. It was a great thing to be welcomed like that right away.
The stage in the Iron Door Club was about so high that the heads of the guests were all at the height of the stage edge. I stood in front. It was very crowded, and the fans were screaming like crazy. A couple of girls waved at me to get closer. I leaned forward a little and all of a sudden arms were coming towards me. Herbert had probably already realized what was going on. They wanted to pull me off the stage. So he jumped forward behind the drums and held me. At least the girls managed to rip out the right sleeve of my leather jacket. It was a bit scary. In retrospect, though, I look at it this way: you could have put anyone there, most likely. The enthusiasm would have been the same..."
In 1965, the Rattles spun off the band's lead guitarist. Wolfgang Korb of the Sharks took Rugy's place. The Four Renders played with this lineup until the end of 1966, when they disbanded. But only temporarily, Lührs and Korb left the professional camp, Bornholdt joined the Tonics, and Rebesky continued with new people until the end of 1969:
Marianne Rebesky (née Weber), vocalsKlaus Rebesky, guitar, organ, vocalsVolker Lindner, lead guitarJürgen Stapelfeld, bass, vocalsErich 'Long Erwin' Goetze, drums, vocals
Marianne Rebesky first became a teacher, but started a solo career around 1970/1971 under the stage name Nina Martin. Klaus Rebesky trained as a commercial clerk. Volker Lindner became an architect and Jürgen Stapelfeld an engineer.  Scene veteran 'Long Erwin', already in the business since the late 50s, went to the Valendras, with whom he is still active. After his time with the Tonics, Herbert Bornholdt made a career as a member of the Rattles, Lucifer's Friend and the James Last Orchestra, as well as a studio musician.
Herbert Bornholdt on December 30, 1998: "I have my 35th stage anniversary behind me. In my successful show band Celebration I play together with super musicians, all of them professional and good guys... We entertain people and are always a big hit. Besides, we accompany many famous artists. Shouldn't I be happy about that?"
