Gute Stuben sehen die Doobie Brothers noch nicht lange von innen. Aber jede Menge Kneipen, Landstraßen, baufällige Häuser und Hinterhofgerangel - das hat sie zu Brüdern gemacht, denn verwandt sind sie nicht. Nachdem sie jahrelang als Hochzeits- und Kneipenmusiker versuchten, ihr Brot zu verdienen, gelang ihnen 1972 der Durchbruch an die Spitze. Ihre Single „Listen To The Music' hielt sich volle 15 Wochen in der amerikanischen Hitliste. Mit dem Album „Toulouse Street' (typisches Merkmal: akustische Gitarre mit Schlagzeug, Percussion und Baß als rhythmischen Background) setzten sie neue Rock-Akzente. „The Captain And Me', ihr folgendes Album, war noch ideenreicher, dynamischer und konsequenter. Das Material für ihre neue, fünfte Langspielplatte „Stampede', die wohl zu den besten Scheiben des Jahres 1975 gerechnet werden kann, komponierten die Doobies größtenteils während ihrer Super-Europa-Tournee. Manager Bruce Cohn: „Der Haufen hat fast ein Jahr Zeit gehabt, an den Titeln herumzufeilen.' Die Bandmitglieder, die alle an der amerikanischen Westküste mit Blues und Soul aufwuchsen, sind Tom Johnston (Lead-Gitarre und Lead-Vocal), John Hartman (Lead-Drums), Pat Simmons (Gitarre und Vocal), Tiran Porter (Bass Vocals), Keith Knudsen (Drums und Vocal) und Jeffrey Baxter (Gitarre). Die Doobies sind also eine Band mit 2 Schlagzeugern und 4 Sängern. Für die „Stampede'-LP holten sich die Doobie-Brothers Session-Prominenz ins Studio. Curtis Mayfield arrangierte, Ry Cooder kam mit seiner berühmten Bottleneck-Gitarre, Maria Muldaur sang mit, Billy Payne spielte Klavier und Jazzern sind die Namen Conte und Pete Condoli, die die Trompeten bliesen, ein Begriff.
