Dixon Brothers: A Blessing To People

4-CD boxed set (LP-size) with 164-page hardcover book, 121 tracks. Playing time approx. 242 mns.

'Dorsey Dixon is the poet laureate of [America's] textile industry.' - Archie Green. The definitive collection of one of the quintessential Depression-era hillbilly brother duos. A treasury of sacred, secular, and industrial songs from the Carolinas, many of them written by Dorsey M. Dixon, author of Wreck On The Highway and other country, bluegrass, and folk music standards. True classics of Americana! Features all surviving recordings by the Dixon Brothers and their affiliated groups. Together in one place for the first time! Also includes thirty-three solo recordings by Dorsey M. Dixon from 1961-1962. Includes the original versions of Weave Room Blues, Spinning Room Blues, Down With The Old Canoe, Two Little Rosebuds, Intoxicated Rat, and I Didn't Hear Anybody Pray (aka Wreck On The Highway), plus more than two dozen previously unreleased recordings!

In 1932, Dorsey and Howard Dixon who worked in the textile mills of East Rockingham, North Carolina, started performing together informally as a guitar-and-steel-guitar duo. Two years later, their haunting tragic songs and textile blues landed them a regular radio spot on WBT's Crazy Barn Dance. Between 1936 and 1938, the Dixons recorded, either together or with other partners, more than ninety selections for RCA-Victor, including such now-classic songs as Weave Room Blues, Spinning Room Blues, Intoxicated Rat, Down With The Old Canoe, and I Didn't Hear Anybody Pray. The Dixon Brothers became one of the best-known and most popular hillbilly brother duos of the Great Depression, and this boxed set represents the first ever devoted to their remarkable work.

The meticulously restored songs on this 4-CD set comprise every surviving recording by the Dixon Brothers and their affiliated groups. The accompanying 164-page, LP-sized hardcover book contains a new biographical essay and extensive song notes by historian Patrick Huber, along with many rare and previously unpublished photographs. Also included are complete song lyrics, a detailed discography, and reproductions of the original session sheets.

Authentic Americana gains in popularity every year, and most of these classic recordings haven't been heard since the Great Depression.

THE DIXON BROTHERS

9. Weave Room Blues

(Dorsey M. Dixon)

Bluebird B 6441; Montgomery Ward M 7024

Roy Acuff machte I Didn't Hear Anybody Pray von den Dixons zum Country-Hit Wreck On The Highway. Pioniere des Folk Revivals wie Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger und Jean Ritchie coverten jeweils mindestens einen Song der Dixons, ebenso wie Jahre später Doc Watson, George Jones, Townes Van Zandt und Brook Benton.

Dorsey Murdock Dixon wurde am 14. Oktober 1897 in Darlington, South Carolina geboren.

5. The Midnight Special (& The Golden Gate Quartet)

Februar 1936 in Charlotte.
