Geboren am 24.1.1945 in Brooklyn, 8 Goldene Schallplatten, ungezählte kompositorische Erfolge und ein weiter Weg bis zur Meisterschaft in der eigenen interpretation, das ist Neil Diamond, einer der brillantesten Songwriter, Texter und Musiker Amerikas. Angedeutete, unausgesprochene Gefühle z.B. in seinen ganz frühen Songs und auch heute die spezielle, leicht melancholische Art, Dinge zu beleuchten, Gedanken und Gefühle zu beschreiben, haben neben seinem musikalischen Talent wohl hauptsächlich zum Erfolg beigetragen.

Zur Schallplatte kam Neil Diamond, als er von den Produzenten Jeff Barry und Ellie Greenwich gehört und unter Vertrag genommen wurde. Seine ersten Hits folgten „Solitary Man“, „Cherry Cherry' und „I Got The Feeling“. Neil wechselte bald die Firma, denn ihm war weniger daran gelegen, Hits am Fließ- band zu produzieren, als sich vielmehr eine musikalische Ausdrucksform zu schaffen. Nach dem Wechsel gehörte er in kurzer Zeit zu den ganz Großen. Eine erfolgreiche LP jagte die andere.

1973 erhielt er 4 Goldene Schallplatten für „Moods', „Velvet Gloves And Split', „Sweet CaroIine' und „Gold“. Im Herbst 1973 kam Neil Diamond zu CBS. Sein Einstand die LP „Jonathan Livingstone Seagull', ein Filmsoundtrack mit 5 gesungenen Titeln, wie alles andere von ihm komponiert. Wenig später auch hierfür Gold. Ein Jahr hat er pausiert, um klassisches Piano zu studieren, doch das Warten auf Diamond hat sich gelohnt, „Serenade', seine letzte Produktion, beweist das.
