They call me the black Caun Frenchman," says Clifton Chenier, introducing himself to the predominantly French-speaking audience at the Montreuz Jazz Festival in Switzerland. I speak French, but it's a different language. Chenier's Zodico music is also different. It is based on the traditional music of the Acadians who emigrated to Luisiana in the 18th century after being expelled from Nova Scotia by the British. But zodico is the music of the black Cajuns, the descendants of African Americans who settled among the Acadian immigrants before and after the Civeil War, and it also reflects the influence of blues and rhythm-and-blues. In fact, Chenier's modern Zodico is primarily blues-based music with Cajun overtones. He plays it on the accordion, an instrument that has long played an important role in Cajun folk music, but his style is distinctly bluesy and he is accompanied by a rocking rhythm-and-blues band.
