The American singer-songwriter and activist Steve Earle has twice given former friends and companions their own albums with cover versions. Unfortunately, these always have to bless their time before Earle gives them a full-length player.

Steve Earle received the 2010 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album for 'Townes'. Townes van Zandt had been Earle's mentor and role model since his youth, with all the good and bad side effects that came with it. A very personal homage to Guy Clark followed in 2019 with 'Guy'.

With Jerry Jeff Walker, another legend of the folk and outlaw country scene from Texas passed away at the end of 2020. Reason for Steve Earle to deal exclusively with foreign compositions once again for an album. He and his longtime backing band The Dukes pay ten-song homage to the 'Gypsy Songman' on 'Jerry Jeff' and translate his music with all due respect into their own Americana band sound.
