Rainer E. Lotz mit Michael Gunrem und Stephan Puille: Das Bilderlexikon der deutschen Schellack-Schallplatten (5 Bände) - The German Record Label Book
Germany was the cradle of the international sound recording industry. After initial experiments with speaking dolls in the Thuringian town of Waltershausen in the 1890s, Hanover, Berlin and Leipzig quickly developed into centres of speaking machines and record production. From there, recording expeditions and field trips all over the world were conducted. The two world wars and inflation interrupted world market leadership, but Germany nevertheless remained an important producer and exporter until the end of the shellac era around 1959 - and, adding modern speaking dolls, until the 1980s.
It is therefore all the more astonishing that German record brands and their labels have not yet been comprehensively presented. This gap is now to be closed: by an opulent work in 5 volumes with over 13,000 colour illustrations on a total of 2,288 pages! Comments and notes in German language.
In addition to the regular commercial shellac records in the narrower sense - with the exception of phonograph cylinders - also all other record carriers are catalogued: in particular sound postcards, picture records, speech doll records, advertising records, contract pressing, self-recording records, anonymous records without company names, flexible records, and much more.

This massive picture book of German shellac records is hardly susceptible to a conventional review.
They are to be found under Anonym-[Grammophon] (Deutschlandsender), along with other issues with different logos. 'Lyra' also has no cross-reference. This is both a book to dip into and delight in, and a very significant work of reference which will answer most questions about the German recording indus-try and its products. Howard Rye

This work is amazing!
This work is amazing! We are already using it for nearly every single question we face related to our historical discography. It is so clearly presented (even if written in German, which only eriches us culturaly a bit more), so nice to take it and find out chronologies, schemes, excellent pictures...
It is also a primary tool to document information other than the audio content (sleeves, stamps, labels, pressings...), which is a matter of great interest for both our users and ourselves.
Grandios
