Die Hamburger Beat-Szene der 60er Jahre ist ohne den charismatischen Sänger aus Liverpool nicht vorstellbar. Geboren als Peter Flannery, gab der Engländer eine Art Dauergastspiel in den Musikclubs der Hansestadt.

So wurde er zwar zur lokalen Kultfigur (etwa im 'Star-Club'), konnte sich aber trotz vieler Plattenveröffentlichungen international nicht durchsetzen. Ecstasy, ein damals oft gecoverter Klassiker von Doc Pomus/Phil Spector, wurde zu Curtis' 'Erkennungsmelodie'. Der Mann vom Mersey River tritt noch heute bei Beat-Revivals auf.
