Pop Christmas

Pop music was the first musical stream that founded 'some other' songs for Christmas time to fit in with Coca Cola's Santa Claus! The song 'White Christmas' is the best example. Nearly everyone connect Christmas time with 'White Christmas'. The song was written by Irving Berlin in 1940, although he wasn't able to write or read music notes. His secretary Helmy Kresa took responsibility to put Berlin's compositions onto paper. Bing Crosby was listening to the song some time later and performed it for the first time on NBC radio on December 25, 1941, shortly after America went to war! Crosby recorded the song in 1942 for the movie 'Holiday Inn' starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. The record went for 11 weeks to number 1 in the Pop-charts later that year! The world was dreaming of a 'White Christmas' during the war years.

And it entered the Top 30 another 16 times and went 2 times to number 1 during the following years. It became an all-time Christmas classic and sold until 1968 62 billion copies! 'White Christmas' was covered by countless stars: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Hank Snow, Jim Reeves, Pat Boone, The Platters, Dean Martin and Rosemary Clooney, to name but a few! Besides those countless versions of 'White Christmas' which can be found in the Bear Family Records store, there are numerous other great Christmas recordings by many stars and big names in the huge field of Pop music on CD and LP vinyl albums. From Dean Martin and Doris Day via Diana Ross and Cher up to modern Pop icons like Christina Aguilera! Especially the countless compilations which very often contains musical rarities are highly recommend by us in particular!
