Let Me Tell You About Love

Ric Cartey

Let Me Tell You About Love

Whaley Thomas Cartey was born on January 18, 1937 in Atlanta, and went to Georgia State Tech, quitting after one semester to form a band, the Jiv-a-Tones. Local theater owner, Oscar Kilgo, took him to Atlanta music maven Bill Lowery, who gave him a tune, Ooh-Eee, from another of his proteges, Jerry Reed. Lowery liked Ric's treatment and told him to go write a flip-side. A few days later Ric came back with an embryonic version of Young Love. Lowery issued Cartey's recording on his own Stars label and sent copies to Steve Sholes at RCA and Ken Nelson at Capitol.

Nelson liked Young Love enough to pitch it to one of his artists, Sonny James, and Sholes liked Cartey enough to sign him. Bill Lowery continued to supply songs, and this was an early effort by another of his proteges, Joe South (Souter). The song itself bore a passing resemblance to Faron Young's hit, If You Ain't Lovin', You Ain't Livin', and the guitar part (quite possibly played by Jerry Reed) bore more than a passing resemblance to The Fool.

None of this helped Let Me Tell You About Love, though, and Cartey eventually returned to Lowery's fold in a business capacity. He still lives in Atlanta, happily retired on fifty percent of Young Love.
