Who was/is Etta Cameron & Bill Ramsey ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

In honor of the centenary of George Gershwin's birth, his greatest songs are reinterpreted here by three musicians who understand and appreciate his legacy like few others in Europe.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1931, Bill Ramsey was introduced to the melting pot of musical styles to be heard in the Queen City. Cincinnati was the headquarters of King Records, famous for R&B, jazz, blues, and country, and it was King recordings that Bill heard as a child, not German Schlager, the music in which he became prominent. In 1952, he came to Germany as a G.I. in the U.S. Air Force and soon found a place in the Frankfurt jazz scene with German musicians such as Albert and Emil Mangelsdorff, Joki Freund, Horst Lippmann, Atilla Zoller, and Americans like Zoot Sims and Stan Getz. Soon, he was playing in clubs around Frankfurt, and then all over Germany and other European countries.

In 1953, Bill sang for Ella Fitzgerald after a JATP concert. Bill remembered that, "Ella turned around to my boss, Johnny Vrotsos, and said, 'All you got to do is close your eyes.' To her, my voice was black, and that was the best compliment I ever had!"

For more than twenty-five years, Etta Cameron has played a major role in the Danish and European jazz scene. During that time, she has worked with such jazz luminaries as Thad Jones, Horace Parlan, Ben Webster, Frank Foster and Ernie Wilkins.

Born on November 21, 1939 in the Bahamanian city of Nassau in the British West Indies, Etta left the Islands for the United States at the age of nine. She began her singing career in a Methodist choir and made her first radio appearance at the age of ten. A few years later, she began singing jazz and blues. She eventually decided to make her home in Copenhagen, and has since toured Europe many times, as well as making return engagements to the United States.

Etta is not just a singer, but also an actress and has had several acting roles, for example on screen, the leading lady role in the danish film ‘Peter Von Scholten’, and in the theater the role, Bloody Mary in the musical ‘South Pacific’. She composes, arranges, and writes lyrics. Besides performing with various Big Bands, for the last twenty years Etta has also been touring with her own band, The Etta Cameron Jazz Group, who has appeared at jazz festivals in Scandinavia, Germany and all over northern Europe performing in concert halls and churches. She also appears with her Gospel choir The Voices Of Joy and has been performing at Gospel events since 1982.

Etta’s recording in Europe started in 1974 with Barclay Records. However, her last four albums, all Gospel recordings, were recorded in Copenhagen. Etta has received many awards and prizes for her musical efforts for example, 'The Golden Lion' in 1994. Since August 1996 she has been an associate professor of music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and at the University of Lund in Sweden.
