Amerikanische Gruppe im Country-Rock-Sound. Gegründet von Gitarrist und Sänger David Gates im Sommer 1969. Mitspieler waren bis1971 Pianist und Gitarrist Robb Royer, Bassist James Griffin und Schlagzeuger Mike Botts. Als Royer ausstieg, kam als neuer Bassist Larry Knechtel. Alle Mitglieder der Gruppe waren schon vor der ersten Plattenaufnahme in Los Angeles gern gebuchte Studiomusiker. Das dürfte wahrscheinlich der Grund sein, dass die Gruppe trotz des großen Erfolges in den Hitparaden nicht lange zusammenblieb. Außerdem strebten David Gates und James Griffin Solo-Karrieren an, die sie teilweise auch schon verwirklicht haben. So trennte sich die Gruppe im Sommer 1973 endgültig. Im Frühjahr 1975 hatte der amerikanische TV-Krimiheld Telly Savalas mit einem von Bread komponierten Song einen Welthit- mit „If'. 5 LPs entstanden in den 4 Jahren - sie zählen heute schon zu den Klassikern des Country-Rock.
