Boxcar Willie: King Of The Road - 20 Great Tracks (LP)
(Colorado) 20 Tracks
A singer in the grand country tradition, BOXCAR WILLIE - who cites Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams among his greatest influences established himself with British fans as the "sensational" discovery of the 1970s, the acclaim feeding back to the USA and opening up the doorways there. "Britain discovered me" he's proudly boasted on many occasions, the result of which earned him success in the US Country Charts, a signing with the Grand Ole Opry and a movie breakthrough in "Sweet Dreams", the biopic of Patsy Cline.
Born in Sterret, Texas, the son of a railroad man, Boxcar has been singing country for v irtually his whole life, supplementing his career ambitions with a variety of jobs that have included ditch digging, selling fridges, working on the railroad and dj work on radio stations. It was his strong links with the railroad, though, that led him to establish his "hobo" stage appearance and perfect the sound of the train whistle — two ingredients that, combined with his authentic country music presentation, made him an hstant favourite with British audiences.
In this collection Boxcar Willie presents the kind of material that's put him on top. There are no more genuine country writers than Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Merie Haggard and Ernest Tubb, or songs more country than such as "Movin' On", "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again", "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", "Jambalaya" and "Gotta Travel On". And when ;n comes to singing country, Boxcar Willie knows few rivals.
