Die 10"-Serie von Bear Family ist bei Plattensammler höchst angesehen. Das liegt nicht nur an der Titelauswahl, son-dern auch an den meist seltenen Covern und der Klangqualität des Vinyls. Auf der 10" des viel zu früh verstorbenen Eddie Cochran werden die Ausdrucksmöglichkei-ten des Musikers mehr als deutlich. Neben den Knüllern wie „C'Mon Everybody" und der obligatorischen Hymne „Summertime Blues" zeigen zum Beispiel „Dark Lonely Street" wie auch „Teenage Heaven" seine gesanglichen Fähigkeiten. Fein! Die Beila-gen dieser Ausgaben kommen einer Wun-dertüte gleich. Neben einer Bonus-CD (überwiegend Cochran-Titel, aber auch ei-nige andere Interpreten wie Heinz sind mit an Bord, der mit seinem „Just Like Eddie" den ergreifendsten Tribute schrieb) gibt es ein großformatiges, 12-seitiges Booklet und eine tolle Postkarte. Todestags des mit 21 Jahren bei einem Autounfall tödlich verunglückten EDDIE COCHRAN wieder voll in ihr anspruchsvolles Zeug. Eine limitierte 10inch-LP plus proppenvolle CD mit 28 Songs der Dark-Eddie-Side sowie umfangreiches, informatives wie optisch wertvolles Begleitmaterial. Das hätte Eddie sicher gefallen, doch da er dazu seine Stimme (außer auf Tonträger) nicht mehr erheben kann, gilt das letzte Wort in dem 12 Seiten umfassenden Booklet Stephen Swan, der sich leidenschaftlich um den Gedenkstein bemüht, der an der Stelle aufgestellt ist, wo Cochran tödlich als Fahrgast in einem Taxi verunglückte.

Klasse ist das flott-rockende "My Lovin' Baby" von Ray Stanley, der Midtempo-Bopper "Baby, Please Don’t Go" von Troyce Key oder das ebenfalls schön geradeaus rockende "Just Relax" von Baker Knight. Dass Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps ebenfalls die reinsten Himmelsstürmer waren, ist nichts Neues. Auf dieser Zusammenstellung kann man eine Version von deren "Git It" finden, die ebenfalls keine Gefangenen macht. Darüber hinaus war sich Eddie Cochran auch nicht zu schade, manche seiner damaligen 'Konkurrenten' zu covern, wie die hier vertretenen Titel "Sweet Little Sixteen" von Chuck Berry oder auch "Blues Suede Shoes" von Carl Perkins (bzw. Elvis Presley, dessen Version natürlich ungemein erfolgreicher war) deutlich machen.
Und da es bei der Bear Family immer die Vollbedienung gibt, sind dieser Scheibe zusätzlich noch eine Eddie Cochran-Postkarte sowie ein ausführliches (ebenfalls 10″ großes) Booklet beigefügt. Bleibt nur noch der Schlusssatz: Get it while you can!

During this year, Cochran scored his first Top 40 hit with the sultry slow-burner "Sittin' in the Balcony" and cut the swinging rock & roll standard "Twenty Flight Rock," along with several other fine sides for Liberty, many of which were issued on the album Singing to My Baby. Nearly all of that album is featured on The Year 1957, with the notable exceptions of substituting alternate takes for "Completely Sweet" and "Twenty Flight Rock," along with the undubbed take of "Ah, Pretty Girl." Added to the mix are a host of radio interviews and promos, plus three live tracks, including a version of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." For most Cochran fanatics -- and it's hard not to argue that this is targeted at them -- it's this back section that will provide the most revelations, and for those who know the hits and want to dig a bit deeper, the interviews do push this collection of tremendously entertaining music toward the educational.
