geb. 14. 12. 1899 in Carthage - Tennessee gest 2. 7. 1982 in Nashville - Tennessee Record Labels: Columbia, Brunswick, Victor, RCA, Roots, Yazoo, County DeFord Bailey, ein farbiger Mundharmonikavirtuose, gehörte zu den ersten Stars der Grand Ole Opry. Damit war er der allererste farbige Repräsentant der Country Music.
Außerdem soll er der erste Musiker gewesen sein, von dem in Nashville Schallplattenaufnahmen gemacht wurden und zwar an einem Dienstag, dem 2. Oktober 1928. DeFord Bailey war von 1925 bis 1941 reguläres Mitglied der Grand Ole Opry, betrieb später in Nashville einen Schuhputzstand und lebte bis zu seinem Tod in einem Altenheim am Stadtrand von Nashville. Seine bekanntesten Mundharmonikakompositionen hießen ,Ice Water Blues, ,Pan American Express, ,Fox Chase und Davidson County Blues. Außer der Mundharmonika spielte Bailey auch ein speziell für Linkshänder gebautes 5-String-Banjo.
