The mesmerizing jazz harp classic from 1958.
Dorothy Ashby was probably the greatest - and certainly the swingingest - jazz harpist of all time, transforming an instrument best known for ethereal glissandi into a versatile voice in combo settings, the stimme in combo settings capable of providing both instrumental embroidery and rhythmic propulsion.

But she always had a hard time achieving critical and commercial success; both her gender and the exoticism of her instrument often prevented her from being taken seriously in the closed environment of jazz in the late '50s and '60s. But it was the uniqueness of her sound and her place in the world of jazz that made her one of the most sought-after musicians of her time, as her music was sampled and equally celebrated by modern hip-hop and world music artists (e.g., Jurassic Five, Bonobo).

"In a Minor Groove" is one of two albums she recorded in 1958 with flutist/saxophonist Frank Wess, it is a marvel. Backed by Herman Wright on bass, also from Detroit, and the superb Roy Haynes on drums, she and Wess weave fascinating melodic threads through standards like "Alone Together" and "Yesterdays."

But perhaps the most amazing track is "Bohemia After Dark," which showcases Ashby's uncanny ability to turn her harp into a rhythm guitar!
