The Almost Blues: The Almost Blues (7inch, 45rpm, EP, PS, SC)

(Vee Tone)

The 'Almost' Blues was formed by Al Peters and Mike Haralambos in Huyton, a Merseyside town just east of Liverpool, quicky becoming an R&B act of influence and repute. Rather than ape the repertoire of other local acts of the early 60s, such as The Beatles or Gerry & the Pacemakers, the group offered a tougher and more purist Blues style which appealed to young Mods and the discerning art-school crowds. Indeed, the record collection of Al Peters, originally the group's lead vocalist, was already something of local legend when many of their contemporaries were honing their craft; original Beatles bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe even once snuck round to Al's mother's to borrow some of his hard-to-acquire Blues and Rock 'n' Roll albums. It was also guitarist, Mike Haralambos, who turned John Lennon onto the sounds of Arthur Alexander. So impressed was Lennon that The Beatles soon recorded Alexander's Anna (Go To Him) and featured A Shot of Rhythm & Blues in their early live performances.

The group played the first of many gigs in Liverpool's Hope Hall district on Saturday 22nd August 1964, including a set supporting British Blues legend, Alexis Korner, under the banner: London Comes to Liverpool. They also performed at several all-nighters in the famous Cavern Club (notably supporting both Stevie Wonder and Rufus Thomas during 1966), where the resident DJ and compAre, Bob Wooler, would complain dramatically at the band's habit of always wearing sunglasses on stage, such that the audience couldn't see their eyes. Al Peters would inisist that it was their music that communicated and, besides, his hero Ray Charles wore them. Exasperated, Bob would respond: "But he is blind!" to which Peters would simply counter: "Ts right, but it's part of the cool." The group also supported Wilson Pickett, Ben E King, Doris Troy, Lee Dorsey, The Exciters and The Who (twice in the 60s). These previously unreleased recordings are belting interpretations of Wilson Pickett, James Brown and Chuck Jackson sides, and feature the soulful vocals of Cohn Areety, who went onto a solo career on Deram in the 70s. The addition of Colin's vocals gave the group the sound they were looking for, making them one of the earliest multi-racial groups in Liverpool. Recorded at EMI's storied Studio 2 on 1st November 1965 by A&R Producer, Bob Barratt, the group nailed these tracks in single takes without any need for overdubs. Note that on the last chorus of their reading of James Brown's pivotal smash, Colin actually sings: "Papa's got a brand new handbag," adding a twist of typical Scouse humour.
