Ähnlich wie bei Z.Z. Hill kam der Erfolg für Johnny Clyde Copeland erst relativ spät in seiner Karriere. Der Gitarrist war sogar schon länger im Geschäft als Hill: Geboren am 27. März 1937 in der Nähe von Haynesville, Louisiana, wuchs Copeland in Magnolia, Arkansas, auf und zog nach Houston, als er 13 war. Dort widmete er sich ernsthaft der Gitarre und orientierte sich an den großen elektrischen Griffbrettmeistern des Staates Texas. 'T-Bone war mein Idol in Sachen Blues', sagte Copeland. 'Gatemouth Brown war so was wie der Pate, also muss man auch ihn nennen.' Auch seine eigenen Zeitgenossen waren nicht ohne Einfluss auf ihn. 'Albert Collins spielte zu dieser Zeit. Er war ein junger Mann, der sich gerade einen Namen machte, und ich hatte Gelegenheit, Albert in seinen frühen Tagen zu hören.' Johnny gründete in den frühen 50er-Jahren mit seinem Gitarrenkollegen Joe Hughes die Dukes of Rhythm. 'Joe war Sänger. Ich wollte nie wirklich singen. Aber Joe wurde mal krank und wir sagten den Auftritt nicht ab, wie wir es hätten tun sollen. Die Frau sagte: 'Ihr müsst spielen!'', erinnerte sich Copeland. 'So begann ich mit dem Singen. Ich wusste noch gar nicht, dass ich singen kann!' Im Stadtteil Third Ward von Houston war jede Menge los und Copeland war mittendrin. Als er 1956 zum ersten Mal ein Studio betrat, steuerte er ein wildes Gitarrensolo zu Clarence Samuels' Excello-Single Chicken Hearted Woman bei. 'Die Gitarrenlinie hatte ich von Johnny Watson', sagte er über seine Imitation des Hühnergackerns auf der Gitarre. Copeland wurde von Don Robeys Duke Records unter Vertrag genommen, veröffentlichte jedoch nie eine Single auf dem Label. Allerdings war er mit Joe Medwick Co-Autor von Bobby Blands '57er-Duke-Hit Farther Down The Road, auch wenn Robey ihm die Autorenangabe klaute. Copelands Debütsingle Rock And Roll Lilly erschien 1958 auf Mercury- danach machte er Aufnahmen für verschiedene Houstoner Labels. 1963 hatte er mit der Single Down On Bending Knees für Charlie Booths Golden Eagle Logo einen regionalen Hit. 'Das war die erste Platte, mit der ich wirklich beim Publikum Aufmerksamkeit erregte', sagte Johnny. 'Danach konnte ich einfach ins Studio gehen und sie ließen mich machen, was ich wollte.' Huey P. Meaux, der 'Crazy Cajun', übernahm die Produktionsleitung für Copeland Mitte der 60er-Jahre und lizenzierte die Aufnahmen an Wand Records in New York. 'Er war immer der Meinung, ich könne alles singen', sagte Copeland. 'Er machte eine Menge Aufnahmen mit mir.' Johnnys Atlantic-Singles Ende der 60er gingen in Richtung Southern Soul. 'Ich habe ein bisschen Soul gemacht. Ich habe einige solche Sachen gemacht', sagte Copeland. 'Aber mein Ding war immer der Blues.' Der Texas Twister bewies es nachdrücklich mit 'Copeland Special', seiner ersten LP für Rounder in 1981. 'Ich arbeitete härter an diesem Album, als ich je zuvor in meinem Leben an Musik gearbeitet hatte. Ich wusste nicht, dass Musik so viel Arbeit machen kann', sagte er. 'Als ich nach New York kam, wurde mir klar, dass ich gar nicht wusste, wie man mit einem Produzenten umgeht. Ich konnte vorher immer ins Studio gehen und machen, was ich wollte.' Claim Jumper war die explosive Eröffnungsnummer der LP- der Arrangeur und Pianist Ken Vangel hatte einen kraftvollen achtköpfigen Bläsersatz zusammengestellt, der Bassist Don Whitcomb und Schlagzeuger Candy McDonald legten eine solide Basis, über der Johnnys Gesang bellte und seine Gitarre die Funken fliegen ließ. Offensichtlich harmonierten er und der Produzent Dan Doyle ganz hervorragend. Nachdem er endlich mit einer Serie von Alben für Rounder und Verve - Gitanes (nicht zu vergessen 'Showdown!', sein 1985er-Zusammentreffen mit Collins und Robert Cray auf Alligator) den ihm gebührenden Status erlangt hatte, bekam Johnny Herz-Probleme. Er stemmte sich viele Jahre lang tapfer gegen seine Krankheiten, verlor den Kampf aber am 2. Juli 1997 in Manhattan. Sein musikalisches Erbe hat seine Tochter angetreten, die Bluessängerin Shemekia Copeland. Bill Dahl aus PLUG IT IN! TURN IT UP! Electric Blues 1939-2005 - The Definitive Collection! - "Plug It In!
