Kenny Roberts: Jumpin' And Yodelin' (CD)

1-CD with 16-page booklet, 29 tracks. Playing time approx. 78 mns.

Called 'youngest among the titans of yodeling' in Doug Green's liner notes, Kenny Roberts could certainly hold his own with the best of yodeling. A pioneer in children's television, Roberts catapulted himself onto the country charts in 1949-50 with I Never See Maggie Alone and Choc'late Ice Creme Cone, novelty songs that largely set the standard for his career. This 29 song collcetion from Roberts' entire 1949-1957 recordings for Coral and Decca features yodeling aplenty. Plus Roberts' pleasant vocals and superb accompaniment by the cream of the Nashville Cats with steelers
Jerry Byrd and Don Helms, fiddle Tommy Jackson and guitarists Hank Garland and Grady Martin. Titles like I Miss My Swiss, Boogie Woogie Yodel, She Taught Me How To Yodel and.
I Finally Got Maggie Alone.

If there was a mythology of yodelers, it would all begin, of course, with Jimmie Rodgers. And from the notes of his blue yodels sprung a generation of titans, the likes of which are not seen today: Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Elton Britt, Wilf 'Montana Slim' Carter, and a decade or two later, Rex Allen, and Kenny Roberts.
Of these titans, only Kenny Roberts remains active as an entertainer with a yodel undiminished by the passing of time, although Autry, Rogers and Carter are well into their 80s as this is written, a testimony to the health benefits of a yodeling lifestyle.

Although Kenny Roberts was born in Lenoir City, in upper east Tennessee on October 14, 1927, he was raised in Athol, Massachusetts, where his father moved after the untimely death of Kenny's mother. A musical calling was strong within him as a child, and he was proficient enough as a vocalist, guitarist, and harmonica player to win amateur contests at thirteen, and to join a radio band, the Red River Rangers, over WHAI in Greenfield, Massachusetts, at the age of 15 in 1942. The following year he joined the Down Homers out of Keene, New Hampshire, and inspired by the records of Rodgers, Britt and Carter

Kenny Roberts

The King of the Yodelers, Kenny Roberts, was a star of the 'Midwestern Hayride' in Cincinnati and the host of a kiddies' show, 'Kenny Roberts' TV Rangers.' He was one of the first artists signed to Coral Records and on January 4, 1950, he recorded the original version of a novelty song Hillbilly Fever. The song was written by New York resident Vaughn Horton aka George Vaughn. Horton and his brother, Roy, led the Pinetoppers, a group that kept country music alive and well in New York during the Depression and beyond. At some point in the 1930s, he wrote Mockin' Bird Hill, but didn't get it recorded until late 1950 when Les Paul & Mary Ford and Patti Page recorded it. At the time he wrote Hillbilly Fever, his most lucrative copyrights had been Louis Jordan's #1 R&B hit Choo, Choo Ch-Boogie and Gene Autry's Address Unknown. "Kenny Roberts' record was moving right along," Jimmy Dickens told Eddie Stubbs (it's likelier, though, that it had been out just a few days and the publisher, Cherio Music, pitched it to Dickens' producer, Art Satherley). "So one day, Uncle Art called me and said, 'I think you ought to do that 'Hillbilly Fever.' We'll get the record out right away.'" And that's what happened.
