DVD NTSC, 16:9, code-free, stereo, 150 min. - A FILM BY Joe Lauro - PRODUCED BY Joe Lauro, Rich Nevins, Rick Coleman - EDITED BY Anthea Carr - WRITTEN BY Joe Lauro, Rick Coleman - EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS Celia Zantz, Daniel Wheeler, Dick Connette
- Upgraded and increased in size compared to the old box which came out in 1993 and has been deleted since years.
- 12 CDs versus 8 CDs, 240-page book versus 60 pages in the old box.
- The music sounds much better on this box set than it ever has before due to the brilliant remastering from the original tapes.
- A lot of new material has been added including unreleased alt takes, undubbed and unedited masters, and instrumental backing tracks.
- Also for the first time anywhere we present some of Fats’s biggest hits as they were originally recorded, not sped-up for release.
- The completely revised book contains a wealth of previously unpublished images, track-by-track musical commentary by the producers, as well as updated and extended notes by Fats biographer Rick Coleman.
- The box also includes an acclaimed video documentary on Fats’s life and music.

Fats Domino Obituary
Like the great Louis Armstrong before him, Fats Domino was a perfect ambassador for New Orleans music.
Even at the height of the mid-‘50s rock and roll explosion, when Elvis and Chuck Berry were scaring the bejeezus out of parents with their primal rhythms and suggestive stage antics, Fats was a cherubic presence when seated behind a piano with a sweet smile on his face and a fat horn section by his side. No wonder he was one of the era’s most prolific and universally accepted hitmakers; with trumpeter/bandleader Dave Bartholomew as his co-writer and producer, Domino unleashed an incredible run of hits on Imperial Records that were irresistible to teenagers and their parents alike. Fats always did the Crescent City proud.
Domino, who died at the age of 89 in his beloved home in Harvey, Jefferson Parrish in New Orleans, Louisiana, at night on the 24th of October 2017, had been ailing in recent years after surviving the wrath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (he had to be rescued from his Ninth Ward home, which was utterly devastated). But prior to his hea
lth woes, Fats never stopped rocking like it was 1957 all over again, always fronting a rollicking band soaked in second-line rhythms and jabbing horns. Domino never seemed like he was just going through the motions; whenever he launched into his raucous set closer When The Saints Go Marching In, it was instant Mardi Gras time.
Antoine Domino
Born February 26, 1928 in the Big Easy, Antoine Domino, Jr. was a shy lad of Creole descent who spoke French before he learned English. Influenced by boogie piano specialists Albert Ammons (whose Swanee River Boogie became one of Domino’s enduring showpieces), Meade Lux Lewis, and Amos Milburn, Fats was given his nickname by bassist Billy Diamond, whose band he played with at the Hideaway Club beginning in 1946. Domino was making a name in his own right by ’49, when he met Bartholomew, who brought Imperial owner Lew Chudd to the Hideaway to check out the promising newcomer. The end result was a record contract that would make immense profits for the label and Domino as it stretched for more than a decade.
The Fat Man, a cleaned-up adaptation of Champion Jack Dupree’s Junker Blues, was Domino’s Imperial debut and just missed the top of the R&B hit parade in early 1950. Fats achieved R&B stardom long before rock and roll reared its impudent head, scoring major hits with Every Night About This Time (1950), Goin’ Home, Going To The River (both 1952), and Please Don’t Leave Me and Something’s Wrong (both 1953). Everything changed when Domino released the stop-time rocker Ain’t It A Shame in 1955.
Typically a Domino/Bartholomew collaboration, it not only paced the R&B charts but went Top Ten pop despite a Pat Boone cover. Rock and roll was exploding all over, and Fats was one of the rowdy music’s first true heroes. Of course, having a crack band at his behest whenever he ventured into Cosimo Matassa’s studio in the French Quarter sure didn’t hurt. Herbert Hardesty, who was prominently featured with Domino’s band for decades, took the lion’s share of the sax solos on Domino’s hits, with studio stalwart Lee Allen handling the rest.
Domino was a rock and roll superstar
For the rest of the decade, Domino was a rock and roll superstar, thanks to blockbusters that included I’m In Love Again, When My Dreamboat Comes Home, Blueberry Hill (his top seller of all), and Blue Monday in 1956, I’m Walkin’ the next year, Whole Lotta Loving in ’58, I’m Ready, I Want To Walk You Home, and Be My Guest in ’59, and the plaintive Walking To New Orleans and My Girl Josephine at the beginning of the new decade. Domino memorably guested in the rock and roll flicks ‘The Girl Can’t Help It,’ ‘Jamboree,’ and ‘The Big Beat,’ headlined countless package shows that barnstormed the U.S. and helped knock down segregation barriers, starred on network TV programs, and remained singularly free of scandal as he loyally doted on his huge family back home when he wasn’t on the road.
After an amazing run on Imperial (all of his masters for the label are available on Bear Family’s eight-CD boxed set ‘Out of New Orleans’), Domino moved over to the ABC-Paramount label in 1963. But by then, the glory years of New Orleans rock and roll were long in the history books. Domino made more platters for Mercury and Reprise, often recording away from his home base, and toured far and wide as the oldies circuit welcomed him with open arms. Eventually Domino decided to retire from the road altogether, limiting his performances to venues that were close to home.
New Orleans was filled with great performers during the ‘50s, but there was only one Fat Man. Monumentally influential to a generation or two of Louisiana musicians (especially the pioneers of the swamp pop movement), he was the very definition of New Orleans rock and roll—as all the gold records adorning his wall during the pre-Katrina days so eloquently attested.

When we first saw Rien Boellaard’s list of 17 tracks that had been left off the Fats Domino box, we were astonished. At least a thousand hours of research, listening, and writing went into the project. Had we really overlooked 17 tracks? That would be both shocking and exciting. It meant we might learn something new about Fats and his recorded legacy. And so we went through his list in detail. And guess what?
Not one of those 17 tracks is on the new Fats Domino box. And, more important, not one of them represents a track we overlooked. There is not a single accidental omission on the list. In every case we were well aware of the recording and chose to exclude it from the compilation for good reason. In most cases, had Rien Boellaard taken the time to read the book that is part of the box set, he would have understood exactly why the track was not included. These were not oversights or errors. They were thoughtful decisions made by the Producers.
Out of respect to Mr. Boellaard, we will go through all 17 of the tracks he has identified. To simplify things, though, we’ll point out that most of his items fall into one of three Categories.
Category 1. A few months after Fats left the label in 1962, Imperial brought some female backup singers into the studio and overdubbed about a dozen of his original masters. These were desperate-for-product attempts to re-release his earlier recordings by updating them to keep making money off Fats. Fats certainly had nothing to do with these overdubs; he had already gone to ABC Paramount. We nevertheless included what we consider to be the five best examples of them on CD 8. In that way we showed our listeners what had been happening to Fats’s music.
Category 2. As we explained in the book, in or around 1957, when Fats’s touring schedule was becoming increasingly busy, he did not have sufficient time in the studio to generate product for the marketplace. Several experiments were made with letting him record on the road, but clearly everyone preferred making records in New Orleans. Another solution attempted by Imperial was to pre-record instrumental backing tracks and leave them in the can until Fats came home and had some time for overdubbing sessions. These tended to be brief and somewhat lifeless affairs. It was also hit and miss as to whether Fats would want to record the song or use the backing track that had been produced in his absence.
As a consequence, there were some unused backing tracks. Imperial actually overdubbed some of those tracks with female singers and an unknown piano player (definitely not Fats!) and included them as filler on some latter-day “Fats Domino” LPs. Those tracks have nothing whatsoever to do with Fats Domino. He neither sings on them, nor does he play piano on them. It was an easy decision not to include any of these recordings on the box. We think what Imperial did by including those tracks on a “Fats Domino album” was tantamount to fraud and we did not want to perpetuate it.
Category 3. Some of Fats Domino's recordings were edited after he left the studio. Some of them were shortened. Others were re-assembled from session fragments. Some were both re-assembled and shortened. On “I've Lived My Life”, a band intro that appeared on the original 78 was snipped off when the track was used on a later LP to produce the impression that Fats had started singing “cold”. Obviously, every track that Fats recorded might be cut in half, extended by repeating a piano solo, faded prematurely, etc. There is no limit to what future engineers might choose to do with original recordings.
We did not feel honor-bound to include every such edit on this box. What we did feel compelled to do was to include Fats’s entire original performance. So, for example, you will discover “I've Lived My Life” exactly as it appeared on the original 78, rather than three seconds shorter because the opening chord was chopped off for a later LP “Boll Weevil” is another track that endured plenty of editing. We made sure the box had the original recording as well as the hit version, which was an edit.
Track 1. See book page 202. For explanation read Category 1.
Track 2. Entire topic is covered on page 143 in the book. There was no need to include this edited version. Everything you'd want to know about Blueberry Hill is included on the CDs and in the book.
Track 3. this is discussed on page 143 of the book. See further discussion in Category 3.
Track 4. See Category 1 and in footnote on page 199 of the book.
Track 5. see Category 1 for explanation. See page 221 of book for further explanation.

Track 15. see Category 2 for General explanation, as well as footnote on page 201.
Track 16. No attempt was made to provide all stereo mixes, some of which appear to be inferior “fake stereo,” especially when excellent original mono mixes were available.

The missing takes on this box are:
Excellent box-set, like the smaller format
Very nice box-set and book. It's an upgrade over the previous box, that one omitted the Paramount tracks. Here the are finally without the distortion and overload. I really like the new format. But paper of the HC book is too thin. I als had a problem with one of the cd’s (cd8), Bear Family replaced the cd free and fast.

Blijft voortdurend hangen of slaat stukken over. Ligt niet aan mijn cd-speler!!!!! De kwaliteit van de muziek is goed, alhoewel ik vind dat het stereo weergeven niet altijd goed is.
Fats Domino
I have not used this box set as its a Christmas present from my wife. But it is well put together and beautiful. It was delivered very fast and totally unexpected but will have to wait to hear the discs until later. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Guid (Scots for Good) New Year (when it comes).
